An Interview with Kim Jong-pil, the Artist of "Teacups Made with Heart: A Complete Edition for Four" by Gwanmunyo

Q. I'm also curious about what emotions you feel every time you touch the clay, apply glaze, or put it in the fire.
A. I later realized that while working with my teacher, I wasn't simply learning techniques, but rather, a way of approaching life itself. Knowing that a single vessel requires the support of not only the soil, but also the trees, people, the weather, and even the entire universe, the emotion that always fills me with the most profound feeling is gratitude.

Q. When creating a teacup, what do you consider most important? Aesthetics, usability, feel, etc.
A. I think it's the overall harmony. The bowl is small. The great emotion felt in such a small bowl comes from the harmony of each piece. That harmony comes from focusing your mind from the first step to the last.

Q. Compared to teacups like 'Raku', how would you like to express the unique charm of Korean teacups?
A. Looking at the works of Japanese and other foreign artists, I've noticed that even their pottery carries a subtle sense of national identity. Perhaps because our emotions are reflected in Korean pottery, it often has a simple and warm feel. That's why it brings me peace.
